26th August- Falkirk Cup and Scottish Athletics Golden League Final, Grangemouth
This was an international event between Scotland, England, Ireland, Ethiopia and a Bank of Scotland Development team. Also taking part were some invited Scottish athletes. Two of these were of a Whitemoss persuasion, Iain McEwan and...me believe it or not.
Iain found himself against UK international Craig Pickering who was competing for England on the night. Iain ran out of his skin to record a time of 11.19 seconds. I meanwhile, with a benefit of a lie in due to a day off work, got spurred on to a 9:11.13 clocking, a new personal best by 8 seconds. Signing 2 autographs afterwards for 2 girls volunteering as kit carriers on the night capped things for me personally.
Also to be found were Mark Stringer (field clerk of course on the night), Willie Sutherland, Cathy Robertson and Steven Whyteside. The action was captured in highlights form on BBC 2 Scotland.
29th August 2009- Lanarkshire AAAs Championships, East Kilbride
A youthful Whitemoss line up, 22 athletes and a hatful of medals was the story of the day here. If we can keep even half of the under 11s and 13s competing here involved in the sport, the club will remain in good health.

21st August 2009- Medal Round Up
August has been a very successful month for Whitemoss athletes on the medal front. The full round up is below.
Scottish Under 20 and 23 Championships- John Robertson took an under 20 pole vault silver with an excellent new personal best of 3.10m. He is getting better and better.
Scottish Under 13 Superteam Championships- Whitemoss are the Scottish Under 13 Girls Champions thanks to the efforts of Sarah McDonald, Nicola Shankie, Lauren McSkimming and Alison Stewart. The girls are photographed at the foot of this article.
Scottish under 15 and 17 Championships- on day one, under 17 Zach Bryson clocked 11.29 seconds over 100m for silver after winning his heat in 11.49 seconds.
On the second day, Whitemoss crowned its newest Scottish champion, Jamie Gemmell clearing an excellent new personal best of 1.70m to win the under 15 high jump. This is also a new under 15 boys club record. Andrew Ravenscroft added to the medal haul by finishing 3rd with 1.60m.
It's fair to say that the last year, while difficult off the track, has been terrific on it. Yes we have suffered relegations in the Central and South of Scotland and Mens Leagues but individually the athletes are performing splendidly. When the summer season comes to an end, I will attempt to present a summary based on my articles during the year.

12th August 2009- East Kilbride Open Graded Meeting
While not as busy as the corresponding fixture last year, there was still a full night of athletics on offer at the John Wright Sports Centre if the Norway v Scotland football match was not grabbing your attention. 16 Whitemoss athletes, plus myself, raced, jumped and threw on the night with some interesting results being produced.
It's pleasing to see 2 new names in Mitchell Wilson and Charlotte Clayton. Hopefully they enjoyed the experience. There was a battle between future Scottish Under 13 Superteam champions Lauren McSkimming, Nicola Shankie and Alison Stewart in the third 100m heat. Taking advantage of the favourable wind conditions, Nicola edged it on the night. The fourth member of the quartet, Sarah McDonald, clocked the fastest time of the 4 girls in the followng heat.
There were 800m personal bests for Walker brothers Euan and Calum much to coach Willie Sutherland's delight. Craig Whyteside also recorded a good time. Under 11 Emily Craig ran hard to clock a sub 3 minute 800m and found enough energy to do the long jump. Team mate Christie McSkimming tackled the 100m, long jump and shot putt.
Multi eventer Emma Frame sharpened her skills at 100m, long jump and high jump while fellow under 15 Nicola Reid enjoyed a victory in her 100m heat.
Edinburgh University bound Lorraine Boyd treated herself to an easy night (her words) doing the long and high jumps. Iain McEwan was 3rd in his 100m heat but will be looking over his shoulder if Whitemoss' newest Scottish international Zach Bryson's form is anything to go by. I lead my 800m at the bell before blowing a gasket and finishing just outside a personal best then finished 5th in a 300m which included 2 Africans. Most folk were away by then.
Finally, during the meeting, Allan Boyd was presented with the Clubmark award from Scottish Athletics chief Geoff Wightman. Photo to follow no doubt.

Above- Allan Boyd who received the Clubmark Award on behalf of Whitemoss on 12th August.

30th July 2009- Linwood Open Graded Meeting
Another open graded meeting, another excellent turnout from the Whitemoss ranks. 10 club members (11 if you include myself) headed to a very well attended meeting. There was a breeze on the home straight but the rain stayed away for the duration of a superb night's athletics. The under 13 girls club championship should be very keenly contested if the performances of Sarah McDonald, Alison Stewart, Lauren McSkimming and Megan Gemmell are anything to go by. Indeed, Sarah, Alison and under 15 Emma Frame lined up against each other in heat 4 of the 100m, the older runner just edging it to win the heat itself.
Elsewhere, Andrew Ravenscroft got the better this time of combined events silver medallist Jamie Gemmell in the 100m heat 2, where the clubmates raced each other, and the long jump. Both recorded jumps which would comfortably score points at the Mens League. Not bad for under 15s.
It is also excellent to see under 11s Christie McSkimming, Emily Craig and Tom Elliot gaining exerience in an environment without the pressure of the leagues. It is true, the team managers take note of these performances. As for me, I was delighted to record my fastest 1500m in a year and a half.
In a recent news article, I flagged up previous Whitemoss athletes going on to earn international recognition. Graeme Leggate got in touch to remind me he belongs to this list, for his 4 x 400m relay appearance at the Scottish Schools International in July 2002. Sorry Graeme. It reminded me of two others I omitted. Competing in the throws at Linwood were sisters Mhairi Walters (now Porterfield) and Kirsty Walters (now Wilson). Both were Whitemoss athletes in the mid to late 1990s and their parents Tommy and Isabel coached with the club. Mhairi threw the hammer for Scotland at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. They now appear to be making comebacks, and why not?

Stuart Gibson, 1500m Grand Prix, 4:13.23, 4th

19th July 2009- Scottish Combined Events Championships, Pitreavie
While Whitemoss has not had its troubles to seek off the track recently, it is very heartening to continually see the athletes producing the goods on it. A club which has produced Scottish and UK standard internationals is continuing to do so if the results of this championship are anything to go by. See the News page also for a bit more on this.
There were silver medals for Iain McEwan in the senior men decathlon, Jamie Gemmell for the under 15 boys pentathlon, Lorraine Boyd in the under 20 women heptathlon (correct terminology?) and encouragingly for Lauren McSkimming in the under 13 girls pentathlon. Just missing medals were under 15s Andrew Ravenscroft (4th) and Emma Frame (6th). All though are setting excellent examples to their club mates.

Above- under 15 boys silver medallist Jamie Gemmell

8th July 2009- Grangemouth Open Graded Meeting
Half a dozen Whitemoss athletes took part in this meeting with a new under 11 name coming to the fore in Alan Dunlop. He will have slept well that night after tackling four events, both rounds of the 100m, long jump and shot putt. Well done young man, let's see more of you.
Under 11 Boys
Alan Dunlop, 100m round 1 heat 6, 16.53s, 6th; 100m round 2 heat 5, 16.42s, 5th; long jump, 3.50m; shot putt, 4.23m

June Round Up
Deep breath, time to catch up on a busy month for Whitemoss athletes.
6th June, Scottish Schools Pentathlon Championships, Grangemouth
We start with the schools events. Now former Craigholme pupil and occasional 10km racer Lorraine Boyd signed off what they say are the best days of your life on a high with a pentathlon silver then a medal a week after (see below). This comprised 100m hurdles, shot putt, high jump, long jump and 800m. Mearns Castle pupil Jamie Gemmell was narrowly edged into 4th in the under 15 boys pentathlon. The events were 80m hurdles, long jump, 200m, shot putt and 800m.
12th and 13th June 2009- Scottish Schools Championships, Grangemouth
I find the school competition age groups system baffling so the results should be read as those achieved by club members in their own age groups. It's pleasing to see some medals won in the traditionally highly competitive schools championships. Zach Bryson is certainly learning how to handle heats and finals if his progressively quicker 100m times are anything to go by.
1. Lorraine Boyd, 100m hurdles, 20.05s, silver medal
2. Elena McKinlay, discus, 16.45m, 9th
3. Nicky McMurtrie, shot putt, 9.84m, 5th; javelin, 34.95m, gold medal; discus, 32.40m, gold medal
4. Lauren McSkimming, 75m hurdles H1, 13.95s, 6th
5. Zach Bryson, 100m H1, 11.80s, 2nd; 100m Semi 2, 11.43s, 2nd; 100m Final, 11.36s, silver medal; 200m H3, 23.46s, 2nd; 200m Final, 23.30s, silver medal
6. Jamie Gemmell, high jump, 1.60m, silver medal; 80m hurdles, 13.29s, 4th
13th June- Ruby Young Memorial 5km Road Race, Kilmarnock
This event is run at Dean Castle Park in Kilmarnock in memory of a Kilmarnock Harriers member who died of cancer. I lined up for a road race wearing my Whitemoss colours for the first time in almost 8 years. Riddled with jet lag having got back from the USA the day before, I decided my heart and lungs needed a heavy jolt after 10 days of fast food and other things bad for you. Following a tentative start on the undulating course, I gradually pulled away and slogged it out to a very rare victory with a time of 16:45. It hurt a lot. Two engraved whisky glasses in a presentation box was a nice reward.
17th June- Ayrshire Harriers Open Graded Meeting, Dam Park, Ayr
An excellent Whitemoss turnout here were rewarded with a clutch of medals. Unlike other open grades, races simply go by age group but are graded according to ability within the age groups. For example, under 15 girls are divided into heats purely between themselves. I'll stop there before I give myself a headache.
Some newer club members gave this a try, the names Beth McCulloch, Emma Monaghan, Alicia Keenan, Declan Paterson and Scott Gardiner making their debuts on these pages. Hopefully the first of many.
Under 13 Girls
Beth McCulloch, 200m H2, 33.2s, 2nd; long jump, 3.11m, 4th; shot putt, 4.99m, 5th
Sarah McDonald, 200m H2, 30.4S, 1st; long jump, 3.50m, 3rd; shot putt, 5.63m, 2nd
Alison Stewart, 200m H3, 31.9s, 1st; 800m, 3:07.6, 7th; long jump, 3.76m, 1st
Under 15 Girls
Gayle Haig, 200m H2, 32.5s, 4th; long jump, 3.49m, 3rd; shot putt, 5.33m, 7th

Under 17 Men
Zach Bryson, 200m, 23.9s, 1st
20th and 21st June 2009- Scottish Senior Championships, Pitreavie
Iain McEwan had 2 goes at the sprints here. Making it through the heats is made more difficult by the fact Pitreavie has only 6 lanes. Everyone up to 800m therefore has to run pretty well from the off. Iain ran hard in the 2nd 100m heat with a time of 11.42 seconds not quite enough for the final. He had even worse luck in the 200m the following day, missing the final despite taking 2nd in his heat in a not too shabby 22.76 seconds.
I meanwhile did not have Andrew Lemoncello to worry about over 5000m but there was still enough quality to concern me. After holding on to 8th for a spell, I slipped back but managed to hold on for 10th out of 14 in a PB of 15:59.11, my best result in a championship to date.
21st June 2009- East Kilbride Half Marathon
Club coach and official Willie Sutherland ditched those duties for a morning to join over 1500 others doing the half marathon and 10km. Willie confirms that he negotiated the 2 lap roundabout and dual carriageway circuit comfortably. His result confirms this, 254th of 631 half marathon runners with a time of 1:46:33.
24th June 2009- Linwood Open Graded Meeting
Under 11 Girls
Emily Craig, 200m H2, 34.44s, 3rd; shot putt, 3.88m; long jump, 3.14m
Christie McSkimming, 200m H2, 35.34s, 4th; shot putt, 3.19m; long jump, 2.70m
Under 13 Girls
Megan Gemmell, 200m H2, 36.54s, 5th; shot putt, 4.22m; long jump, 3.30m
Sarah McDonald, 200m H1, 29.02s, 1st; shot putt, 5.51m; long jump, 3.82m
Lauren McSkimming, 200m H1, 30.18s, 4th; shot putt, 6.41m; long jump, 4.11m
Under 15 Girls
Emma Frame, 100m H4, 14.18s, 1st
Under 11 Boys
Tom Elliot, 200m H2, 31.80s, 1st (excellent time for an under 11); shot putt, 5.24m; long jump, 3.99m
Under 15 Boys
Jamie Gemmell, 100m H2, 12.65s, 6th; high jump, 1.65m
26th June 2009- Calderglen Harriers Trail Races, Calderglen Park, East Kilbride
I assisted my former club with stewarding on a dry, windless night, perfect for running. This is a series of races around the challenging but scenic trail terrain of Calderglen Park. Alasdair Stewart competed in the under 13s 3km, having a good run to finish 9th of 75 finishers in 12:15. He appeared to be favouring his calf as he passed through the finish funnell. One only hopes it was nothing serious.
He may not realise it but I also spotted George Reid in the 10k. He crossed the road towards the Sainsburys depot looking happy enough and, according to the results, made it back from where he started in around 50 minutes. I believe the route is slightly long so this is a very respectable effort. Well done George and Alasdair.

24th May- Central and South of Scotland League Division One Match Two, Linwood
A sparce turnout, largely due to school and university exams and possibly the holiday weekend, lead to a disappointing 7th place finish for Whitemoss on a cold day at Linwood. Surely the organisers have to reconsider scheduling of these meetings. There's very little on in June which would probably suit everyone better and now a 3 month gap until the third competition. Positions on the day were:-
1 Ayr Seaforth, 960
2 Kilbarchan, 876.5
3 Law & District, 855
4 Shettleston Harriers, 714.5
5 Giffnock North, 714
6 VP City of Glasgow, 706
7Whitemoss, 635
8 Dunfermline & West Fife, 499
The overall league table looks like this.
1. Law & District, 14
2. Ayr Seaforth, 13
3. Shettleston Harriers, 12
4. Kilbarchan, 11
5. Giffnock North, 10
6. Whitemoss, 5 (1323 match points)
7. Victoria Park, City of Glasgow, 5 (1253 match points)
8. Dunfermline & West Fife, 2
There were some terrific performances again from our athletes with, as before, a lot of talent shining through. In my own view, the timing of this meeting, where almost all of our under 17 and senior women were ruled out with studies, has cost us. There is no doubt in my mind a full strength team in August will see us okay.
The full results can be accessed here.

9th and 10th May 2009- Championships Round Up
Age groups from under 13s to seniors had to share the spotlight over 2 action packed days at Wishaw. It was a tale of two types of weather, Saturday bringing sheets of rain and Sunday much sunnier conditions. 14 club athletes in total competed. It proved to be a story of successes and near misses.
Firstly, one boys team took part in the first ever Scottish Athletics Superteams Championship. Alasdair Stewart (definitely the correct spelling, my apologies for earlier mistakes), Calum Walker, Graeme Blake and Conor Caughie competed in 800m, long jump, javelin and the 4x100m relay. Their collective efforts had them in bronze medal position going into the relay. Heartbreakingly, they finished 4th with 196 points behind Annan and District (198), Law and District (208) and Victoria Park City of Glasgow (212). A fine effort by the boys all the same. Next up, the newly formed under 15 and 17 closed championships. Nicky McMurtrie is still listed as a Whitemoss athlete in the results. We shall continue to claim her for now.
Under 15 Boys
Jamie Gemmell, high jump, 1.60m, silver medal; 80m hurdles, 12.73s, 4th
Andrew Ravenscroft, 400m final, 57.29s, 4th
Under 15 Girls
Emma Frame, 75m hurdles (heat), 13.43s, 5th- I mistakenly missed Emma in the Young Athletes results but have now amended the article below
Laura Gosling, shot putt, 7.85m, 6th
Elena McKinlay, discus, 19.54m, 4th, PB; shot putt, 7.46m, 8th
Under 17 Women
Nicky McMurtrie, discus, 26.10m, gold medal; javelin, 30.22m, bronze medal
Finally, a new Scottish Athletics invention, the Scottish Inter Regional Championships. 4 Whitemoss personnel found themselves selected by team manager Jim Goldie for the West Coast team. None were more surprised to be there than me, finding myself in the 3000m steeplechase. Even greater shock followed when I placed 3rd of 5 athletes in a PB of 10:08.63 taking a bronze medal. 3rd was also George Dingwall's placing in the javelin with 48.14m. John Robertson just missed a pole vault medal, 4th with 2.80m. A 3m clearance will no doubt come soon. Iain McEwan had a productive day, winning the 100m B race (11.27 seconds), taking 2nd over 110m hurdles (16.65 seconds) and doing 4th leg for the winning 4x100m relay team.
Capping off the quartet's day, West Coast won the match overall, taking the Innes Trophy, named after John Innes, a Scottish Athletics official who sadly died in December 2008. It was a magic moment on the podium.

3rd May 2009- Scottish Young Athletes League Central Division, Grangemouth
Whitemoss take part in the Young Athletes League as part of the South Lanarkshire team together with athletes from our friends at East Kilbride, Law and District, Cambuslang and Larkhall. While blustery and rather cold, the rain stayed away during a busy afternoon of action. The timetable stating that the track programme would finish at 4pm was a touch optimistic. Think more 5.30pm with the field done and dusted 2 hours earlier. No real hold ups, just a busy programme. It was a holiday weekend though so not too many were concerned. As seen with the 16 names below, Whitemoss members made up a healthy chunk of the team. Congratulations to all. Some real talent is beginning to shine through.

29th April 2009- Linwood Open Graded Meeting
Young under 13 girl Alison Stewart was the sole Whitemoss competitor at the first 2009 Linwood open graded meeting. Entering the long jump, Alison recorded a jump of 3.78m which was one of the top 10 efforts recorded on the night out of over 30 entrants. As you will see above, she did the same event at the Young Athletes League albeit in much more blustery conditions.

26th April 2009- Central and South of Scotland League Division One, Grangemouth
The first of the three meetings took place at Grangemouth on a day with a mix of sunshine and spring showers. Whitemoss were 6th on the day with the following points totals scored.
Law & District, 892
Shettleston Harriers, 851
Giffnock North, 845
Ayr Seaforth, 843
Kilbarchan, 773
Whitemoss, 692
Victoria Park City of Glasgow, 547
Dunfermline & West Fife, 346
Hats off to everyone who competed for the club on the day. My own view of the result is disappointment. Whitemoss has the potential to perform very well in this competition but we seem to let ourselves down in recent years with low numbers in the first meetings. Based on the second and third meetings in the last two years, we could have potentially been runners up or 3rd in 2007 and 2008. Next up is Linwood on 24th May. Come on athletes, don't let your club and your team mates down.

19th April 2009- Scottish Athletics Mens League Division 1 Match 1, Meadowbank, Edinburgh

Hotter than Ibiza? You better believe it was at Meadowbank, provided you stayed out of the shade where the temperature dropped sharply. The above snap shows the troops packing up at the end of the afternoon. More photos to follow on the Flickr page. Click here to read a full report on the day's proceedings.

12th April 2009- Ayrshire Harriers Open Graded Meeting, Dam Park, Ayr
Just behind Ayr Racecourse, Whitemoss' own thoroughbreds put the chocolate eggs on hold this Easter to get in some competition practice. Amongst the mass of Ayrshire athletes were Whitemossonians Fiona Thomson, Alison Stewart, Rachel Connelly, Caitlin Lee, Laura Gosling, Jamie Gemmell, A. Connolly and Zach Bryson. Again, there are a couple of new names in that list. Click here for the full results. These are in Microsoft Excel format. 5th April 2009- Nithsdale AC Open Graded Meeting, Dumfries
The David Keswick Athletics Stadium in Dumfries, in previous years, was used for Central and South of Scotland League meetings. With those centred more around the central belt now, chances to visit the neat little venue have become few and far between. Whitemoss descended en masse to this open graded competition in 2007. This year, 9 took the chance to kick off their summer seasons.
Well done therefore to Craig McEwan, Jamie Gemmell, Sarah McDonald, Lauren McSkimming, Andrew Ravenscroft, Zach Bryson, Alicia Keenan and Christie McSkimming. Keep things going over the coming weeks and set an example to your clubmates. The 9th competitor was Iain McEwan's coaching assistant Kate Gemmell who treated herself to a rare outing over 100m. This proved fruitful as she claimed a medal with a not too shoddy 16.7 seconds.
